Leaning Into Events To Build Individual Donor Communities
I love the part of my job that keeps me close to the pulse of what’s happening across social impact, philanthropy, and events. It puts me in ongoing conversation with former colleagues leading organizations across the country, past and current clients, and fellow nonprofit consultants. I get to listen closely to what they’re experiencing, spot patterns, and think ahead about what’s needed now - and what’s coming next.
This is what I’m hearing, seeing, and thinking:
We are living through a period of profound uncertainty - marked by instability, shifting priorities, and real disinvestment in mission-driven work.
Organizations that have invested in strong individual donor communities are navigating this moment from a position of relative strength. Those reliant on institutional (corporate and federal) funding are feeling the strain more acutely.
At the same time, there is a growing number of individuals who are ready to do something. They want to understand where they can make a difference - and contribute their time, energy, and resources in meaningful ways.
They’re also looking for something deeper: connection. Community. A sense of belonging.
This creates a powerful opportunity.
Mission-driven organizations are uniquely positioned to build community around the causes that matter most. And one of the most effective ways to engage people - emotionally, collectively, and quickly - is to bring them together in a shared, intentional experience.
Yes, that last point reflects my bias. But I’ve pressure-tested it again and again - and it holds.
In moments like this, gathering isn’t just valuable. It’s essential.
Because alongside the uncertainty and disruption is something else: a widespread desire to connect with purpose, with impact, and with each other.
And that’s what continues to buoy me.
Our clients are doing deeply needed work. We have the privilege of partnering with them to design experiences that unlock resources, grow community, and help people feel more connected - to the mission, and to one another.
✨ Planning a gathering - or looking to make your next event more intentional?
We’d love to help you bring it to life. Let's talk.
All the best,
Rhiannon
