On collective effervescence (and how it happens)

There’s a certain magic that happens when people gather with intention — a shared pulse that rises when we move, think, or celebrate together.

Moments that strip us down to our most human selves — connected, open, and alive.

Sociologist Émile Durkheim called it collective effervescence — the electric energy that connects us to something larger than ourselves, and to each other.

Over the holiday break, I listened to two wonderful podcasts that explore this idea:

We’ve all felt it — that rush when a DJ drops just the right beat and a whole room feels it; the quiet awe of walking through redwoods with others; sharing a meal that’s as much about connection as flavor.

At Gather Co, we see that spark every time a room fills with purpose and possibility. It’s in the laughter that ripples across tables, the quiet nods of recognition, the collective exhale after a breakthrough moment. That energy — the hum of togetherness — is what we design for.

So how do you create those kinds of experiences?

It starts with intention — and a deep trust in what can’t be forced.

These moments are about being connected, open, and alive. You can’t over-engineer them. There’s careful design behind them, yes, but also space — room for the magic to emerge on its own.

Taking care of the basics — the logistics, the sensory details, the bio-needs — allows people to relax, let go, and be open to something new.

At its core, it’s always about the collective. About designing for connection, and nurturing the relationships that make it all possible.

In a world that can feel heavy, we’re looking forward to creating more of these deeply connecting experiences with many of you this year.

We need them — and each other.

All the best,

Rhiannon
